Fiat 127 Sport information
The Fiat 127 Sport, introduced in 1978, was a spirited variant of Fiat's successful supermini, the 127, launched in 1971. Distinguished by its striking exterior stripes, sports seats, and alloy wheels, the Sport gave a lively character to the otherwise practical city car. Under the hood was a 1049 cc four-cylinder engine producing 70 hp—a remarkable output for a small hatchback of the time—mated to a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission. This combination delivered spirited performance, with a top speed of over 160 km/h (100 mph) and brisk acceleration, making the car popular with enthusiasts of fast Italian compact cars.
Technically, the 127 Sport retained the standard car's front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout but benefited from a firmer chassis and wider tires, which improved handling. Front disc brakes provided greater stopping power. The interior featured sporty details and a rev counter, further emphasizing its performance.
Although its production run was relatively short, ending in the early 1980s, the Fiat 127 Sport gained a loyal following and is now considered a classic in the hot hatch genre, known for its combination of everyday usability and genuine driving pleasure, typical of Fiat's sporty models.
