Singer Nine “Special Speed”, 1935 | € 37.500,--
Singer Nine “Special Speed”, year 1935. Chassis (VIN) number 63302, engine number SS56525. First registration in the UK: AOL 1. Exterior colour dark British Racing Green combined with a tan (dark beige) faux leather interior and green carpet. This fantastic Singer was sold new in the UK, the full history is known and documented from day 1! This Singer Nine is a rare “Special Speed” model which was introduced in 1935 as a more potent version of the Singer Nine “Le Mans”. The “Special Speed” model received a tuned 38.5 hp (28.7 kW) engine with twin vertical Solex (30 IF) carburettors, a speed cylinder head with angled spark plugs, a heavier cast iron flywheel and a counterbalanced web* crankshaft (*fitted with counterweights that balance the weight of the connecting rods.) Furthermore, a bigger 61 L petrol tank was fitted, and the passenger compartment was enlarged by moving the spare wheels backwards. The Singer Nine cars were widely used in hill climbs and trials all over the UK, and the cars raced in the smaller classes at Brooklands and Donington. The big international success of the Singer Nine in racing trim was the 7th place overall in the 1934 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race. In this Singer Nine “Special Speed” model you will find a bronze plaque on the dashboard commemorating this stupendous feat. This Riley Nine “Special Speed” was restored and overhauled into the tiniest detail in 2008. This was done on behalf of its then owner, the CEO of Goodyear in Denmark. When the current owner bought the car from the Danish family in 2021 the car had only driven 500 kilometres since the rebuild. The current owner has driven about 300 kilometres since the acquisition and had fitted new wire wheels matching the body colour in 2024. This Singer Nine “Special Speed” is in a superb condition and the car drives delightfully. The car was always owned by enthusiasts which can be seen by looking in the historic documentation. All the former owners are known, and every change or improvement was punctually added. An impressive photo report of the restoration is also present as is the original British V5C document. This is a great opportunity to buy a rare original Riley Nine “Special Speed”! If you own a 1930s house with a small garage, this car will be a great talking and driving piece to put on show and enjoy!
